The Sexual Side Effects will be performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, August 11th

The Sexual Side Effects will be making an appearance at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, August 11th, 2012.

Drawing comparisons to Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde, front girl Amber Taylor knows how to work a crowd, with an aura that reverberates on and off stage. Her electric charisma and haunting voice command attention while her epileptic guitar work leaves audiences gasping for breath. Guitarist Matt Foster adds complex textures and edgy solos while bassist Mike Sidner and drummer Clay McClure lay down solid, yet understated, grooves.

Verge Of Bliss will be the first performer of the evening.

"The Atlanta-based power-trio’s sound is best described as psychedelic rock with a sultry and POWERFUL female lead singer. Virginia Bliss, the bands lead singer & bass player, has some amazing vocal ability similar to the late Janis Joplin mixed with current rock-star Aja Volkman of Nico Vega. Their songs range from mid-tempo and slow powerful psychedelic rock ballads, to drum-charged & heavy 70-ish-sounding beats fueled by drummer Stuart Gussman." ~ Indie Music Reviewer

The Levee will be performing before Evan Andree.

The Levee was birthed out of a need to create. Brandon Funk came to the table with 14 songs with the intention of recording an EP using only local talent out of Atlanta for everything it takes to make an album. After enlisting the help of Kyle Schumacher and Michael Stallings to help record his solo project, the three knew that they had something unique. The EP turned into an LP, and the solo project turned into a band, and after recently solidifying their line up with the addition of Tucker Richmond.

The Sour Notes will be starting the show.

"Never short on hooks or ambition, The Sour Notes play brittle pop for star-crossed post-grads... On rising tides of lonesome guitars & glimmering synths, the band builds its postmillennial laments, occasionally nodding to Krautrock & frequently conceding to soundtrack-worthy mood." -Erik Adams, The Onion AV Club

Ocean Vs. Daughter will be starting the show.

"Dreamy but never droney, Prague-rockers Ocean Versus Daughter are really good at the achingly beautiful thing. Things tend to start simply and starkly, maybe just the American-born Flanna Sheridan's snow-angelic voice, some strings, a little piano. But as the melody expands and the sound adrenalizes with riffs and beats, pretty new sonic worlds open up. Smart stuff to sway to." --Philadelphia City Paper, June 2011

Androcles and the Lion formed in August 2010, after songwriters, McKendrick Bearden and Austin Harris, moved to Athens. The pair met while studying music at LaGrange College. To pass the time while working on composition projects the two began writing songs together.

Antbrain will be starting the show.

"Deft songwriting and a feral energy form the core of Antbrain's music. Just underneath the wisecracks and zen-like koans burns a 21st century lyricism wavering between crippling neuroses and supreme confidence. Lee and Bonawits sing with a semi-shouted roar, often at the same time, never losing sight of their innate melodicism. The overall sound is decidedly 90's, coming across as a weird mix between the Pixies, Moldy Peaches and Pinkerton-era Weezer. Someone once said they sounded like The Presidents of the United States of America, but they did not like that comparison."

Little Horn are headlining The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, August 3rd, 2012.

Keith Forrester has a dark, southern tinged ,soul-searching lyrical style that often questions the validity of traditional religious dogma and he does it with a not-so-typical low end voice. As a band Little Horn is unique in their lack of shame for tastefully wailing their instruments, and the fact that they have been called any number of combinations of indie, folk, gothic, psychedelic, progressive and rock. To hear them tell it their approach is fairly simple: they love what they do, they write what they like, and they hope to be doing it for a long time.

Harkening back to punk rock’s glory days of the 70s, Oklahoma outfit Broncho captures the aggression, DIY authenticity and youthful exhilaration of a bygone era and then drags it by the hair into the Here and Now, creating a fresh sound that’s unlike anything being played today. With echoes of The Replacements, Iggy and the Stooges and The Ramones, Broncho’s exuberant ten song debut Can’t Get Past the Lips is a blisteringly cathartic 20 minute flash of gritty, crunching guitar work supported by an assaultive rhythm section and made whole by songwriter Ryan Lindsey’s aggressive, yelping vocal work.

Bunny Gang featuring Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly are performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, July 26th, 2012.

There comes a time in his life when each and every man needs to express himself, and for Nathen Maxwell that time has come. For the past thirteen years Maxwell has been leaving his heart on stage as the bassist for the seminal Celtic rock band Flogging Molly, one of the biggest touring punk acts in the world. An accomplished songwriter in his own right, Maxwell has contributed songs to Flogging Molly albums in years past, but things progressed differently when the band went into the studio to record Float, their most recent release. “I played these songs for the band and our singer Dave [King] said, “Nate, you’ve got your own story and I really think you should record these songs,’” Maxwell explains. “Once I got his blessing I figured it’d be bad karma not to record and release them.”

A Place To Bury Strangers are RETURNING to the Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, July 24th

A Place To Bury Strangers are returning to The Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, July 24th, 2012.

"Guitars as jet engines; guitars as haunted electronics; guitars as filling-melting white heat: A Place To Bury Strangers' new album Worship is explosive, visceral, and dark. APTBS' DIY-braintrust of Death By Audio wizard Oliver Ackerman and bassist Dion Lunadon continue the evolution of songwriting that began with Onwards to the Wall, the band's 2011 EP. Now on Worship, they interweave threads of krautrock, dream-pop, and 80s goth without ever losing the edge that is quintessentially Strangers. Unhinged dissonance is artfully framed within a fiercely dynamic and assured melodic sensibility. Standout "You Are The One" is a coldwave white squall, with Ackerman coming through like an austere and menacing Damo Suzuki. Later on "Dissolved," the band methodically builds an atmospheric battle charge only to take a hard left mid-song into pure, shimmering Cure territory. There are ambitious, trend-bucking choices at every turn."

Hollywood, Florida is not your typical beach town. The buildings, diners, and of course the beach appear frozen in the 1950’s. Probably a result of the town’s population boom happening in that era, a current drive down the streets feels like your moving through an R. Crumb drawing. Things seem exaggerated and a bit odd. The now mature population seems a caricature of their former selves.

It is this strange place, lovingly dubbed Hollyweird, Florida, that the trio Beach Day calls home. Their sound is heavily influenced by their surroundings. They make new music, but it is definitely old at heart. And it’s definitely sunny, but not without some murkiness.
