Kyle Andrews is headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 14th

Kyle Andrews will be headlining The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 14th, 2011.

For years, Kyle Andrews has struggled with a dirty secret. He was, in the eyes of so many, a "singer-songwriter", his past pockmarked with words like "sweet," "catchy," and perhaps most often of all, "bedroom." However, according to Kyle, his latest full-length release Robot Learn Love only sounds like a bedroom pop album if your bedroom happens to be on an escape shuttle hurtling towards an exploding star.

Robot Learn Love is probably the closest Kyle Andrews has come to a concept album. Throughout, he explores themes of modern life -- love, heartbreak, hurt, and longing-- experienced through the filter of technology. "We work, create art, and communicate every day through some sort of computer device, some sort of robot," Kyle says. The album itself is a product of its theme: from the album art, inspired by a cellphone snapshot sent from the other side of the world, to the instant message abbreviations in song titles, and the composite of vocals collected by email in a single afternoon to form the chorus of "Lazer Tag With Imaginary Friends."

Despite its walls of electric guitars, raw synths and blasting drums, Robot Learn Love was conceived and recorded almost exclusively by Kyle himself. Robot is an exercise in duality: lo-fi vocals recorded through built-in laptop mics, others recorded through top-of-the-line studio preamps, drums simulated with software in the bedroom, and backing live string players tracked at pro recording studios. Half drowning in a swirl of stuttering synths, Andrews' plaintive cry, "Why's it got to be so complex?" at last gives way to a rest, a breath, only to be sucked back into the lush chaos. Throughout, Andrews balances the bombastic sonic textures with personality and warmth.

Parachute Musical will be the second performer.

"From the first note of “Back To Life,” the album’s opener, the tone and cadence of Kill It Cut It Down become immediately evident. The aggressive-but-bright pop-rock anthem begins with frontman Josh Foster pounding a rhythm into his piano keys, followed by a flood of lyrics that are generally grittier than the glossy and polished music accompanying them imply. The texture created by the seemingly-intentional contrast between melody and lyrics keeps the music smart, leaving room for versatility within each track. Despite the candid nature of Foster’s lyrics, Kill It Cut It Down is not at all transparent.

Produced by Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple, Incubus) in Cleveland, Ohio during the dead of winter, Parachute Musical further exemplify their proclivity to finding the harmony in contradictions. Describing their month in Cleveland as “the coldest month of our lives,” the final product sounds like a sunny and colorful summer album, untouched by freezing temperatures and Christmas carols. The music on Kill It Cut It Down subsides and escalates when you need it to, but the band reels it in during some of the crescendos, safeguarding the songs from falling victim to fist-pumping pop-rock melodrama.

The most impressive part of this album may be Josh Foster’s vocals. Powerful and melodic, it can sometimes be difficult to focus on what he’s saying because he makes it all sound so good. The band sounds solid during the loud moments, but the quieter moments of the songs shine a necessary spotlight on Foster’s lyrics and vocals, a trick best played on “Back To the Bottom,” when the music noticeably takes a backseat to each verse so the story of Foster’s past can momentarily steal the limelight.

“Losing You” is the album’s closer as well as its brightest diamond. A slow-build ballad about the beginning of the end of a relationship, the vocals and instruments on this song soar in a flourish of talent and heartbreak. The end of the album is the best place for this track because, as great as the rest of the album is, this one is difficult to get past.

Kill It Cut It Down asserts its solidity in finding perfect balance in the midst of contrast. Rather than creating a sloppy and contradictory album, Parachute Musical have found logic in the conflicting components of their music and created a lively and reflective album that will probably sound equally as fantastic when you hear it live." - Brianne Turner / Audioholic Media

Fishhawk are starting the show.

FishHawk is an Atlanta based band. Their dance flavored electro beats, mixed with the soul of the 70’s and the decadence of 80’s “synthpop”, evolved into what is now known as the signature FishHawk sound. FishHawk formed during the summer of 2006 with producer and multi instrumentalist Andy Slagle and lead vocalist and wordsmith Nick Nickerson. Shortly after the completion of the 1st project, Matt Williams joined the band helping with live instrumentation. They have since toured up and down the east coast and released two albums and the recent EP "Spacehawk" all three available on iTunes. Fishhawk’s innovative style is molded from a variety of genre’s that have been melded together to create their unique style. Infectious melodies and textures from guitars, keyboards, pedals and voices soar overhead, coloring the energetic rhythms that keep you moving all while being entranced by the soulful and poetic lyrics that seem to be channeled by your own subconscious.

Margot And The Nuclear So and So's are returning to the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, October 13th

We are presenting with Ok Productions

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's at The Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Margot & the nuclear so and so’s third album Buzzard is primal and truculent, going straight for the vitals. Opener “Birds” finds the band going to places they haven’t before – lovely, languid verses progressing into fuzzed out, howling choruses throughout the song’s twists and turns – while still holding to the guitar-based ethos on which the album is founded. “Lunatic, lunatic, lunatic” may be familiar sonic territory for singer/guitarist Richard Edwards, but the (very) dark humor that slowly unveils is something that he has only flirted with (innocently) in the past. “New York City Hotel Blues” and “Claws Off” distill Margot’s music to its essence: melody-driven pop music with teeth, set adrift against Edwards’ surreal and emotional, if slightly twisted lyrical tendencies. Similarly, “I Do” refines the evocative chamber-pop for which the band is known to its most heart-rending fundamentals, supported by simply Richards’ plaintive voice and an acoustic guitar.

And there is, of course, an intriguing path that led Margot towards this evolution in sound, which contrasts the lively optimism of 2008’s Animal! (and/or Not Animal, simultaneously released after contention with former label Epic). Buzzard was recorded over one freezing month last winter in an abandoned movie theater in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood. Edwards had taken up residence there after leaving his hometown of Indianapolis, when the house where he and the previous seven members of the band had lived was damaged in a fire last summer. Once settled, he began writing a collection of songs loosely inspired by the 8mm ‘nudie cutie’ films unearthed in the theater’s basement, and the youthful reaction of mixed emotions that the films evoked.

After six months of writing, longtime Margot members Tyler Watkins and Erik Kang joined Edwards in Chicago and the three began to dig into the new material. A cast of local musicians, who had begun to come to the theater to watch weekly screenings of Kamikaze Hearts, soon also joined them. It was against this grainy backdrop that Edwards and Co. recorded the songs with the help of these new friends, including drummer/producer Brian Deck, Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), Joe Adamik, Cameron McGill, Katie Todd and Ronnie Kwasman.

Theater seating was cleared away to accommodate the instruments, while a makeshift control room was assembled in the projection perch. As the days went by, a dusky, Bacchic energy started to fill the theater and Buzzard began to take form. Recording took place between the hours of 10pm and 5am, and no artificial light was allowed (as such, three musicians and engineer Neil Strauch broke bones from tripping over cables). Accidents aside, the willful band – live and manic, newly freed from any past constraints – growled their way through the songs and infused them with a raw, forceful energy that Margot had only hinted at in their past recordings. The result is the band’s most immediate studio recording: bigger and louder than ever before, finally capturing Margot’s powerful, captivating live show and defiantly Midwestern sound.

Bear Hands will be starting the show.

Dylan Rau started Bear Hands to spite a romantic rival. In disconnecting himself from the love triangle (and successfully copulating with several other humans) he was able to write about 70 new and exciting songs. Joining forces with fellow Wesleyan university alumnus Ted Feldman and iconoclast punk veterans Val Loper and TJ Orscher the band started to stomp live. Both other bands and people in the crowd were stomped regularly and definitively.

Touring became a new way of life for Bear Hands after the 2007 release of their Golden EP. The band opened for MGMT, Vampire Weekend, The XX, Les Savy Fav and spent time on roads all over North America and Europe with now-dear friends Passion Pit, Obits, We Were Promised Jet Packs, Hockey, Manic Street Preachers, and Mayer Hawthorne and The County.

Following the success of their most-recent single "What A Drag" (Too Pure (UK) // Cantora US) Bear Hands delighted weekend warrior crowds at such iconic festivals as Reading, Leeds, Siren, Rockness, and Forecastle. They did shows in Brazil with fellow Brooklynites Chairlift and Telepathe, narrowly escaping with their lives and intestinal parasites.

And now things are really starting to get heavy for Bear Hands. Their debut LP, Burning Bush Supper Club, took over a year to finish, slowed to a crawl by mental illness, intraband resentment, and a generally pervasive sense of indecision. Produced before the watchful eyes of frenemies and industry fat cats alike, Burning Bush Supper Club sees Bear Hands reach unprecedented levels of both truth and relevance. The songs are beautiful and new.

Army Navy are performing at The Fivespot on Saturday, October 8th

PFH Productions, Filter Magazine and Bowe Inc. are presenting:

Army Navy at The Fivespot on Saturday, October 8th, 2011.

"The playing's always spirited, producer Adam Lasus lends the disc a warm, ingratiating sound, and the songs are both taut and well-considered in their arrangements.” - Pitchfork

“Pure pop for now people” – SPIN, 8 out of 10

“in the grand power-pop traditions of Shoes, Material Issue and the Fountains of Wayne, wallowing here is delivered with buoyancy.” – LA Times

Army Navy was born in the bedroom of Justin Kennedy, who in his early days played with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) in Seattle’s Pinwheel. Having relocated to Los Angeles after Pinwheel broke up, Kennedy began focusing on his new project and started assembling members for Army Navy. Multi-instrumentalist Louie Schultz joined swiftly after hearing Kennedy’s home demos. Without a permanent sticks man at the time of recording the first album, Army Navy’s album boasted drumming by the legendary Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello and The Attractions, who had been a longtime fan of the band. Army Navy soon found their permanent drummer Douglas Randall.

Santah is the third performer of the evening.

Santah was born with their heads in the clouds and their feet stuck in the dirty ground. Luckily, right before they grew up for good, a tidal wave swept them up, quick as can be, and sent them teetering across the continent. They howled in confusion when that water came, arms all flailing, their faces purple as raisins. But they rolled back their eyes and just like that, they were in some holy home, right there in their own head, right there on that ocean, riding a wild and blurry-eyed vision, just being the most confused and luckiest boys to ever live or die in the whole goddamn world, just like that, all over the place.

Moodrings are the second performer of the evening.

"After just a few listens to Mood Rings’ “Promise Me Eternity” b/w “Exorcized Painting” 7-inch, it's plain to see that both songs saddle up with the same dreamy drift that defined the group's sound upon releasing the Sweater Weather Forever EP back in January. Growth has taken place but mostly on a meta level that reveals more with each successive spin, allowing atmosphere and damaged pop aesthetics to unfold with an unhurried pace.

Although it’s generally a charming song, “Promise Me Eternity” falls on the breezy side, which is fine, and not really out of character for Mood Rings. But it lacks the murky and alluring bottom-end that marked the group’s intro, and illuminated much of the mystery that lined the hiss and negative spaces in Sweater Weather.... That said, this new single moves at the speed of clouds floating in the summer sky, and is quite easy on the psyche. Just as one ear latches onto the jangling strum of the guitar and drums that fly by like a sonic boom, the other ear gets lost in the lazy day melodies that consume the song with mesmerized and romantic pop motions.

On the flipside, “Exorcised Painting” comes to an end almost as quickly as it springs to life at only 1:32. Of the two songs here the b-side is far and away the more energetic number — short sweet and tailor-made for repeat needle drops. When placed side-by-side, both songs give an intriguing look at a band that’s becoming increasingly comfortable with its recorded self, and hinting at what may be lying in wait with the wealth of songs that Mood Rings has been sharpening on stages all year long." - Chad Radford / Creative Loafing Atlanta

Bottle Up & Explode will be starting the show.

"Bottle Up And Explode is a foursome from Auburn, AL, and it does not play country music. This is a band that reflects modern and classic influences, the two most salient being the Beatles and the Strokes (singer Chris Cargile’s vocals recall proven Lennon/McCartney formulas as well as Julian Casablancas’ lyrical styling). This dynamic is surprising for guys whose upbringing largely forbade music and pop culture at large.

The band members grew up in a deeply religious part of the South where church wasn’t just on Sundays. The Thomas brothers—Micah (keyboard) and Caleb (lead guitar)—were home-schooled, so steady glimpses of the outside world were snatched here and there until the cultural blast-shields wore thin and finally collapsed all together. The other half of the band went through a similar experience. Just how severe was the music ban growing up? Remember the movie Footloose? The band’s bio tells tale of burnings at the local chapel of popular books, movies and music. “It was more like breaking,” explains Cargile, who tore up a Goosebumps book and had a friend stomp on his Lion King VHS. Cargile’s father took a hammer to his records, and only the Beatles were spared. “Oldies were somehow exempt from the devil,” says Cargile. “I don’t understand the logic of that, but the early ’60s and earlier were exempt. I’m glad he saved those.” The boys are full of stories from those days, perhaps because they’re so elemental to their music. The taste of freedom, after so long without it, proved to be intoxicating.

Bottle Up And Explode’s EP, Kingsley, embodies that spirit wholeheartedly. It’s exuberant and uptempo, a rallying cry, free of the hang-ups of modern malaise. Cargile sings about the friends in his hometown, getting older, getting dumped. This is all typical pop-fair but freshly packaged in both Cargile’s boyish voice and sheer musical energy. It’s no secret that these guys are genuine, as their honesty shows up in whatever they’re doing. “I think as far as our sound goes we wanted to do something that sounded as young and immediate as we feel and live our lives,” says Cargile. “Everything down South is a little old, a little worn out,” says Caleb Thomas, “and it’s easy to see that you’re headed for a graveyard like all your kin before you. It’s hard to believe in being young sometimes.” The local honkey-tonks are a monument to that since they only play music you can two-step or line dance to." Alex Erikson / CMJ

Gospel Music is performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, October 11th 2011.

"Owen Holmes hails from Jacksonville, Florida. Wow, there’s one place I’ve never wanted to go. Already, I digress.

He plays bass for the Black Kids. They’re okay, I guess; hadn’t really given them much thought. If his (mostly) solo project Gospel Music is any indication, though, Holmes has a solid future as a singer-songwriter. And not one of those boring, self-indulgent ones, but more like an entertaining, diverting, poetic and self-indulgent one – hey, the last goes with the territory. Pretty much.

Recorded at home in the Sunshine state, How to Get to Heaven From Jacksonville, FL is a small treasure for anyone attracted to literate, self-abasing humor and primitive, but musical melodicism. Taking substantial cues from Lou Reed and Stephin Merritt, Holmes writes with pith and wit about romantic mismatch (“Bird/Fish”), romantic despair (“This Town Doesn’t Have Enough Bars for Both of Us”), romantic betrayal (“I Shared Too Much with Her”) and romantic resignation (“Bedroom Farce”). He self-accompanies these little morsels with sharp, spare instrumentation that concentrates on acoustic guitar, toy piano and ukulele, fleshed out with all manner of instrumentation, including the standard bass and drums (he even uses banjo without making me grab for my faux-Americana annihilator … a handy weapon, indeed). With limited chops, Holmes makes the most out of nifty little framing lines on guitar, bits and pieces of melodic guitar-age, stray elements of this and that, from the Velvets to the Ventures." Lille is Grace Bellury, an songstress from Atlanta, GA. Born a poor asian boy, Grace accompanied his father and three sisters to America, where they sailed on a ship carrying spices to every corner of the earth. He was the friend of every swarthy sailor and sat up late at night in the cabins below the deck, the warm lantern glow radiating off the roughened yet kindly faces, spinning stories of exotic girls from every continent and exploits worthy of a Conrad novel. The sailors constructed papooses made from sturdy rope for Grace and his small sisters and they hung suspended from the ballast every night, sleeping peacefully.

The Subliminator is celebrating the release of "Death Singing" at the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 7th

The Subliminator will be celebrating the release of his "Death Singing" ep on Friday, October 7th at The Drunken Unicorn.

"Part prophet of doom, part musketeer, The Subliminator painted an almost Messianic figure as he sauntered to the stage dressed all in black, his face obscured by long black hair and sunglasses. Taking the third, sixth, ninth, and 12th songs, he used an array of five optical theramins to erect densely layered loops in a matter of seconds. After establishing a framework of electronic beats and glitchy digital effects, he would record a background of guttural groans, a pratice which called to mind the film scores of Alejandro Jodorowsky. Only after these entrancing sonic structures had effectively seeped into the listener’s head, however, did The Subliminator begin his real work, spouting enraged, socially conscious spoken word poetry with the Vietnam-era fervor of The Monks. Touching on capitalist greed, social injustice, religious hypocrisy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and at one point playing both parts in an imagined conversation between George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, The Subliminator is aptly named to say the least. Like an Alan Ginsburg acid dream brought to vivid life, his self-serious commitment to this provocative material brought a welcome sincerity to a poetic form that too often slides into the cheesy.

Ignoring the crowd and distancing himself from the other bands for most of the night, this man did not suggest water, and while it was never explicity stated, I’m not sure he intended to. His focused outrage against the Bush administration and the Iraq war, not to mention his jet black attire and noticeable nonparticipation in the liquid cominglings of Tunabunny and Box Devils, characterized The Subliminator as an ominous spot of oil drifting atop the surface of the ATHICAn Sea. In so doing, his performance could not help but invoke the horrifying images that have been coming in from the Gulf of Mexico these past few weeks as the Deepwater Horizon spill continues on its indiscriminate path of drifting death. In winding down a show so brilliantly curated around the often devastating effects of water, The Subliminator reminded the crowd that these tragedies extend beyond the decoarted walls of the ATHICA art gallery into people’s homes and lives, and that without vigilance against corporate greed, environmental devastation, and national oil-lust, we could all wake up one day underwater.” – David Fitzgerald / Flagpole

Dam-Funk & Master Blazter will be appearing at The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011.

Dam-Funk:

"Known as Los Angeles' "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Dam-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: 'Dame' as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-'80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.

As a DJ/selector, Dãm attracts the most discerning Boogie Funk afficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it's not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups' unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.

The next phase of the Ambassador's mission is his debut album Toeachizown: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today's scene with Dãm's own original "Modern-Funk" compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records' like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought Dãm on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It's a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk."

Master Blazter:

"BLAZT OFF, a mix by Los Angeles’ own DJ Kutmah, showcases the individual styles of Computer Jay, J1, and D-F. Collectively, they are known as Master Blazter. Individually, each is accomplished in his own right, and as a group, there is no stopping the funk they create.

Computer Jay develops hard hitting tracks built upon moog, rhodes and personally tweaked electro systems. J1 provides the backbone of rhythm on drums, while equally being comfortable producing quality funk laced beats. D-F adds his signature vocals and provides layers of deep funk with his own keyboards and keytar.

The countdown has begun….

Three musicians with their own distinctive styles have come together to form Master Blazter. Each individual is an integral part of the whole - each one necessary to keep funk music alive, taking it to unforeseen heights.

Peter Wolf Crier is headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Peter Wolf Crier will be performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

It is not so much a sound as a spirit. You don't need to name it to know it or to trust it. Peter Wolf Crier's second album Garden of Arms is a document that paints a vivid portrait of all the pain and beauty of growth. Written with the at-home repose demanded by performing a hundred shows in six months, these eleven tracks were nurtured from their hushed origins with a new-found footing of confidence and experimentation. Adapting the tenets of the grinding live show, the duo of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen transformed the fuzzy distortion, rolling and crashing drums, and laser-focused purposefulness into an intensely dynamic yet supremely polished album.

The lead off track, "Right Away", best exemplifies the band's new direction, a dense and jarring embrace of the immediacy of real personal connection. Later on in the album, restraint is more readily apparent, in tracks like "Settling it Off", where the sonics do not threaten to overwhelm but are instead peeled back to reveal a more subdued, secure sense of direction.

The notion that any one of these songs could be your favorite depending on where your head and heart reside, moment to moment, is the most appealing aspect of this album. Throughout Garden of Arms, swagger is juxtaposed against an icy delicacy, making the scope of the record complex but somehow an easily digestible statement of how Peter Wolf Crier are rolling: a wheel, rusted with unrestrained hope.

Milagres will be performing second.

New York was wearing on Kyle Wilson, lead singer & songwriter for the Brooklyn-based quintet Milagres. So he took off, away from the city and his band and his issues… all the way to the coldest, most remote part of British Columbia where he could get some space and breathe. As so often happens in life, he got a little more space than he bargained for – during a rock climbing trip he fell and ended up spending months bedridden with a back injury. Before he left New York, Wilson had thought he might leave the band behind entirely. But during the long days of his recovery he found himself writing songs again, and he realized he wanted to go back.

Upon his return to NYC, Wilson drafted Fraser McCulloch (bass, backing vocals, keys) into his new vision of Milagres, sharing with him the arrangements that he dreamt of while recovering from his injury. These demos were then refined with the addition of Eric Schwortz (guitar, backing vocals, percussion), Chris Brazee (piano/keys) and Steven Leventhal (drums, percussion), evolving into what would become the new group’s first LP, Glowing Mouth.

The musical scope of the album is big and due to the piano-based melodies and soaring falsettos, early press has compared the band to artists as diverse as Grizzly Bear and Prince, demonstrating the wide breadth of Milagres material. The first single, "Glowing Mouth", is a slow-burner made for dancing close on a hot summer night, whereas "Here To Stay" has a keyboard hook that won’t let you sleep. Kyle Wilson has a knack for writing dreamy story songs that also pack a punch in both chorus and melody. Songs like "Gentle Beast" and "Gone" suck you in and then haunt you for days afterwards – this is an album that stays with you.

Spirits and the Melchizedek Children will be the opener.

Forged in late summer nights surrounding a dying bonfire at camp 1538, Spirits and the Melchizedek Children began as lead singer Jason Elliott’s acoustic ramblings. His opened-ended lullabies and ballads developed in equal measures of melody, psychedelic meanderings, and eulogies to times past. After several months of recording solo, Elliott’s personal lullabies were fortified with the addition of band mates Chris Case, Darrin Harrison, Joe McNeilll, and Craig Henderson. A slightly different incarnation of the group, which now features Bryan Fielden of San Agustin on drums and no Darrin Harrison. The newly formed band gave Elliott’s songs an unprecedented depth and intangible appeal. Spirits and the Melchizdek Children have been praised by Atlanta-based music critic Chad Radford as “[creating] a sparse, ghostly, art-folk din that moves from a 4 a.m. whisper of distant, lonely strumming and moaning to a roar of tape hiss.” Evolving from crackling static into sonorous melody and back again, Spirits has melodic sensibility gently woven into the chaotic fabric of their haunting arrangements. Unapologetically unexpected and comfortingly familiar, Spirits and the Melchizedek Children’s ambient appeal provides the soundtrack to lost summers, new loves, and the hopeful yearning of beginning again.

Suspect Raptor will be performing second.

"Meet Suspect Raptor, a lo-fi indie rock band of non-dinosaurs out of Georgia.
These four play grunge-y rock that hints at queercore’s past. Suspect Raptor’s music is mostly slow and controlled, with a good amount of groove, especially for an indie band. That mostly is thanks to bass player Leo Charles, who gives a slight reggae/ska vibe to songs like “Charlene” and “Sandlot” that otherwise have straight forward drums parts and contrasting crunchy/twangy electric guitar. Vocalist Ashton May sings beautifully, and her reverb laden voice is powerful, and seems to haunt over the music. Her best work is over the simple guitar and vocal “Ghost in Hand,” and that slow, understated track may be their best so far. Suspect Raptor is relatively new, but they’ve already seemed to really settle into a great sound, and they are very much deserving of your attention." - Fuck Yeah, Queer Music

Joel T. Hamilton is a mouthful. It's 5 syllables and doesn't well roll off the tongue. As a musician he has trouble sticking to one instrument, as a songwriter one genre, as a lyricist one voice resulting in vague ineffectivity. This quality very visibly imposes itself upon his life as well. As a person he writes his own bio in third person and feels silly. He has a failed garden in his backyard and got sick off cheap tequila last night and wants to die today. He knows there's something to be said about highlighting ones better qualities but often has trouble finding them. He's a below average arm wrestler and knows he needs contacts but refuses. Perhaps you'd be better off making your own music than listening to his.

Tricksy are performing second.

Tricksy is the derby-inspired project created by Julie Clark in 2009. After seeing her first flat track roller derby bout in 2008, Julie became obsessed/inspired by all things roller derby. It was then that Julie came out of retirement as a musician and founded her own band. Julie started her music career in Atlanta in the early 90's and was soon touring with the likes of Wendy Bucklew and Lift as a bass player and backing vocalist. It was in 1998 when she was tapped by Shawn Mullins to play bass in promotion of his new self-released (now Platinum) record. She has shared the stage with the Indigo Girls, Chris Isaak and Hootie and the Blowfish and has made appearances on the Tonight Show, the Rosie O'Donnell Show, VH1's Hard Rock Live and television appearances all over western Europe.

This road tested veteran now seeks to blaze her own unique trail with her new band by bringing a more aggressive sound than her previous projects. Tricksy's songs are irreverent, humorous and hard-edged with no apologies offered. Tricksy has enlisted the help of former Cogburns frontman, Glenn Kuras on guitar, Flat Cat guitarist, Amy Rollinson, Former Mulva Twitch bassist, Michael Smitherman and the hard-hitting Mark Trouse on drums.

Tricksy seeks to embody the sights, sounds and attitude of the modern roller derby. If ever a sport screamed for its own soundtrack, roller derby is that sport and Tricksy aims to provide the music.

Lace up your skates and get ready for some hard hitting sounds!

Pink Pompeii will be opening the show.

“I'm no music critic by any stretch so don't expect that out of this review but what an enjoyable journey listening to this album was! Pink Pompeii (the group) has a sound that ranges around and doesn't want to fit in to a genre. The tunes range around a variety of styles, some are dance tracks, some are gothy, some a little punky, some more rock. All of them sound like the musicians are just enjoying what they do which is refreshing from some of the mass produced stuff out there where they just phone it in.

I think my favorite track out of the set was JF Sebastion which was so full of pathos that I could barely stand it. Almost all of the songs have gotten stuck in my head at some point and I haven't gotten tired of listening to any of them and I usually get bored pretty quickly.

The snippets here on Amazon do a fairly good job of representing the tracks (as good as a snippet can). So give a listen and see if it appeals to you. Music is such a personal thing it's kinda pointless to say much more than that.

Great vocals, awesome beat, cool cello, amazing musicality, lyrics that draw you in. What's not to like? Five stars!” – Jay / Amazon.com user review of "De Riguer” - Pink Pompeii's debut release

Ricer is RAWKING the Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, September 28th

Ricer will be performing on Wednesday, September 28th, 2011 at The Drunken Unicorn

It's 2011 now and Ricer is set to unleash the follow-up that will make the whole world take notice, not just the Chinese. "XXX+SIZE" expands the Ricer sound while also refining it. From the poppy punk of Switch and Ladyfingers, (think of the band Ricer); to the otherworldly, almost film noirish One on One and Strangers, (not unlike a darker Ricer); to the neo-musique concréte UN/Terror Kids, (like Ricer collaborating with long time noise provocateur Sequence 3); to Bleeder, (think of Ricer crushing your soul & spirit then helping you up so they might crush your conception of listening to anything but Ricer); "XXX+SIZE" has, to borrow the motto of WREK's Destroy All Music, - "something for everyone". China got it in 2010, now 2011 will be the year of Ricer for the rest of the world.

Are you ready? For the future? For the Mad, Heavy....HEAT!!

Calm White Noise are performing first.

Very fresh to the Atlanta music scene is Calm White Noise. The band began to take life in the early months of 2011. Band leader and creator, Dylan Banks, gathered three of the best musicians in the Atlanta area (Ricky Taft, Bill Walker, Andre Griffin) to help turn his visions and ideas into a full functioning entity of marvelous sound waves. Calm White Noise played their first show in Athens, Ga at New Earth Music Hall in April, 2011; since then they have played a few local shows in Atlanta, Ga, but looking to play a lot more in the future. This group brings a unique style to the rising local music scene, pulling influences from rock, experimental, indie, and electronic to create a truly unique sound of their own.

Calm White Noise has a wide spectrum of sounds with emphasis lyrically on the observations one sees though experience, love, fear, and much between. They hope the message brought can reverberate to all here on Earth, and as well, throughout the Cosmos.

Qurious are the second performer of the evening.

"I’ve been listening to a lot of Qurious lately, especially their first release from 2009, Transmission Permissions. The five plus a bonus track record feels more like a collection of demos when compared to the epic Planet Plant, but it’s interesting to hear the early stages of one of the most unique and impressive bands in this city." Ohmpark

Featureless Ghost will be performing first.

"Coming hot on the heels of their recent release Projections, New Wave-influenced synthpop act Featureless Ghost has been hard at work on their latest full-length, New Moods, for a while now. Now that it's finally finished, the band is giving it away on a pay-what-you-want model, with the option of a free download. In the same vein as their earlier releases, New Moods is a dense and complex record, full of heavy beats and trippy, layered synths. The 8-song album is surprisingly long, despite its short tracklist. Many songs on the album drone on for well over seven minutes, giving listeners plenty of dark, danceable tunes." - Eric Brown / Creative Loafing Atlanta

Fang Island is performing at the Drunken Unicorn, on Saturday, September 24th

Fang Island is performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, September 24th

“If this is the arena rock of the future, send me a ticket.” — Pitchfork

“A triumphant, heavily riffed, primarily instrumental epic, whiplashing through six minutes of smiling prog jams, and as many tempos as passages, before settling into one last minute of uplifting chants.” — Stereogum

“Life-affirming prog guitar anthems.” – Seattle Stranger

Fang Island describes its sound as “everyone high-fiving everyone.” And, the Brooklyn quintet’s anthemic and soaring songs make it quite possibly one of few bands befitting such description.

Its finger-tapping guitar lines, chanted vocals, triumphant harmonies and overall perky songs hearken to the sort of “Total Music” of the Fucking Champs, Jay Reatard, Ponytail, Kraftwerk, Marnie Stern, Thin Lizzy, et al. But, perhaps more so, its songs are like the music in your head at that moment when everything feels just right: that first kiss, that high score on the video game, buying your first small nation in cash… you know, good stuff.

Vegan Coke will be the second band performing this evening.

"Let’s see what we have here: a decidedly hippie-fied band name, a hand-painted album cover and an 18-minute track called “Space Jam (Looney Tuning).” Gotta be a jam band, right? Well, no, not really. While Atlanta-based Vegan Coke definitely digs the extended instrumentals, there’s a lot more Motorhead than Wookiefoot in their DNA.

Untzbenon opens at its most accessible with “Architeuthis,” a fuzzed-out, six-minute stomper that rides Eric Grantham’s manic drum work around in circles. Chad LeBlanc’s meandering guitar jousts good-naturedly with Amir Mirsajedin’s foreboding bass as the track moves from frenzied uproar to smooth groove and back again. It’s a deceptively tight track that suggest the noisier efforts of mid‘70s prog/proto-metal acts like Hawkwind.

The sound takes a more modern turn on the eight-minute “Anhedonia.” With its creeping guitar licks and big, ballsy rhythm section, it plays sort of like someone mashed together the opening riffs of a dozen or so tracks from a “Today’s Best Alternative” radio station. It’s basically hard rock hook after hard rock hook, with enough musical variety to keep an audience engaged for the duration.

The run-times keep on expanding with nine minutes of “Gay Gothic Cowboy,” a piece that doesn’t immediately bring to mind any of the words in its title. Instead, it’s another churning chunk of old school metal that takes frequent detours into avant noise rock. It’s a little less coherent than the preceding tracks, although the bouncy middle section is oddly captivating and the high-speed conclusion borders on psychedelic.

And then there’s the main event. “Space Jam (Looney Tuning)” completes the album’s evolution from melodic to straight-up experimental with nearly 20 minutes of guitar feedback, electronic chirps and general cacophony. It’s actually much more listenable than one might think, thanks in large part to the stable groundwork laid by Grantham’s drums. Much like a good jazz drummer, he uses his percussion as a recognizable reference point, giving listeners something to latch onto in the midst of all the sonic tumult. The result is a noisy but intriguing track that falls more on the Yahowa 13 side of heavy jamming than the Metal Machine Music side.

All told, Untzbenon is something of an academic exercise. Everything here is solid and exciting, but it’s hard to imagine the album getting a ton of spins in most folks’ collections. Still, it’s a consistently engaging exercise in hard rock experimentation. Perhaps most importantly, it gives the impression that Vegan Coke puts on one hell of a live show." - Ira Brooker / Made Loud

Nigredo will be the first band performing.

"Finally, Nigredo took the stage. With fifteen feet of pedals, including eight Moog pedals, these five men sounded like they were playing about fifty instruments. Outside it only seemed like the world was ending. Inside, thanks to this dark, heavy, droning, harsh music, it was certain. Two frostbitten thumbs up!" The music reflects a lifelong attraction to song craft as well her deep-rooted affinity for contrasting types of music. Mountain Lion is performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, September 21st.

Mountain Lion was born from the ashes of Addison Morarre's numerous attempts to start a band after he wrote a few of his own songs in 2008. It wasn't until early 2009 that he found a drummer in Addison Foreman. Shortly thereafter, they recruited the help of friends Robert Henry and Carlo Suits on guitar duties, along with occasional help from seasoned bassist Jo Jameson. Jameson helped the band record their first demo with Michael Green in winter 2010. A lineup shift brought forth permanent bassist John Cable and singer/guitarist Madison Laughridge in 2010. Their debut EP "Oceans" was released in April and is available on iTunes now.
