Entertainment are headlining The 529 on Saturday, January 7th, 2012.
Entertainment take all the best parts of early 80s LA goth and wrap them in layers of spaced-out dub, postpunk shards, tinny synths, and cavernous silence
As part of the new crop of US underground acts updating the American Deathrock + UK Post Punk aesthetic, Entertainment have performed with legendary and up and coming artists: Nina Hagen, Lene Lovich, TV on the Radio, Christian Death, Glass Candy, the Prids, Faith + the Muse, IAMX, Dead Confederate, Alaric, Religious To Damn, King Dude, White Ring + Anika.
B-R-A-N-E-S will be the second performer of the evening.
"Equally influenced by the spastic experimemtations of Devo, the deviant derivations of The Birthday Party, and classic hardcore gothic ruminations, the band has developed a unique sound which they describe as "Batcave Wave / Wicked Noodle Music", which, of course, requires further explanation.
"As dark as a batcave," says B-R-A-N-E-S. "And just as upside down. We have entered the era of 'Generation Spaghettification'; BRANES is music for wicked noodles."" - The Point

Wymyns Prysyn are performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, January 7th, 2012.
WYMYNS PRYSYN kicks a bunch of ass. We wear sunglasses at night. We wear leather jackets....year-round. We smoke lots and lots of cigarettes. We take our coffee black. We drink our whiskey straight. We write songs about the weather, sugar-free red bull, Henry Owings's bbq, ignorant fools who talk to you THREE INCHES FROM YOUR FACE, and our very american friend John who thinks he's actually an irish expatriate for some reason. This tape contains 12 blistering kvlt punk parties in a non-stop assault on your shitty aiwa boombox. Along the lines of early HOT SNAKES or whatever; we really don't care what you think we sound like. Yes, I just used a semicolon. We are from Atlanta and have played in bands before.
Come CELEBRATE THE END OF 2011 with Attractive Eighties Women at The Drunken Unicorn on NEW YEARS EVE 2011 - Saturday, December 31st, 2011.
"Sounds like Molly Hatchet crossed with an 8th grade talent show..."
With their wild costumes and on-stage antics, AEW have often been described as "Post-GWAR Kiss revivalists". One eyewitness at an early show claimed the band was "like a tornado of two-hundred Led Zeppelins, out-of-control and bearing down on a South Georgia trailer park... picking up all the hot women and spinning them away to some distant rock n' roll Valahalla."
The Most Ignorant Band In America - Coming to a venue near you!
"It's already been said several times, but ahhh 'guyliner' .. gotta love it Anyway, I think it depends on the guy and their style. With some guys, it just goes with their style, and it looks cute."
Like Clockwork will be having a homecoming show at The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, December 28th, 2011.
"Something old. Something new. That's the critical musical balance behind Like Clockwork: an odyssey of sound, mind, spirit and poetic lyricism from the chaotic, yet diametrically romantic mind of Jesse Owen Astin."
Beach Party (!) began in February 2011, when writer Trace William Cowen drunkenly wrote and recorded a noisy break-up anthem which would later become "Massacre." At the time, Trace was finishing up his online film series "I Like You," itself a meditation on love & relationships. The song was left alone until, several weeks later, Trace decided to finish it. He immediately contacted his old friend Cameron Johnson and Beach Party (!) was gloriously born. Shortly after this union of minds, guitarist Matt Blaskowski and bassist Caed Turner hopped aboard the pop train and took it to radio town.
Evoli are going to be the second performer of the evening.
Evoli is a quintet alternative folk-rock band that hails from McHenry, IL. With four talented songwriters, a knack for performing, growing popularity, and a brand new album, these musicians are shooting for the stars.
Evoli is a family- a slightly insane band-family- and we specialize in entertaining. We are a bunch you can’t forget- even if you wanted to. With four songwriters contributing to our set list, we have a diverse range of sounds- all including the undeniable and unique Evoli twist. We can’t explain the ways in which we find ourselves hilarious or how our music will keep you with your music player on repeat; you’ll just have to trust us.
Pillage & Plunder are performing at The Basement on Saturday, December 17th, 2011.
"Atlanta’s Pillage & Plunder have just released their debut record, a six-song EP entitled Look Inside for the Prize full of quirky, angular pop and rock that sounds like nothing else going on in this town right now. " - Latest Disgrace
"Pillage and Plunder is a strange beast. The six songs on their debut EP find an unusual intersection between bright, clean indie-pop and math-rock complexity, resulting in a sound that’s a little jarring on first listen. Give the songs a little time, though, and it all starts to come together...There’s something unique here, and I look forward to hearing from them in the future." - Little Advances
Gospel Music, featuring Owen Holmes of Black Kids will be performing third.
"With the dive bar his sanctuary and minimalist story-songs about failed romance, long-distance running, sharks and unrequited love his psalms, Gospel Music’s debut full-length album, How To Get To Heaven From Jacksonville, FL, will be released on October 25 on Kill Rock Stars. Contrary to its moniker, there’s nothing religious about Gospel Music, that is unless you worship at the altar of clever lo-fi indie pop and your holy trinity consists of Lou Reed, Stephin Merritt and Jonathan Richman. The musical alias of Jacksonville singer/multi-instrumentalist Owen Holmes, who pulls double duty as bassist for Black Kids, Gospel Music’s first LP takes its album title and cover art from a pamphlet produced by a turn-or-burn evangelical church he attended as a Southern Baptist teenager. (A lot has changed since then.) A copy of the original pamphlet is included in the vinyl version of the album.
The forthcoming long-player sees Holmes picking up where he left off with his acclaimed 2010 EP duettes, a five-song collection of charming duets with members of Camera Obscura, Vivian Girls, The Magnetic Fields, Hefner and French singer-songwriter SoKo that Pitchfork described as “long on infectious melodies but short on arty pretension...Fans of lo-fi pop would be hard-pressed not to be won over by his lyrical specificity, melodic infectiousness, and vocal collaborators.” Using a musical arsenal of toy piano, banjo, acoustic guitar, organ, ukulele, bass and drums, Holmes casually delivers 11 stories with a conversational baritone reminiscent of David Berman, Adam Green or any of the aforementioned male vocalists. Jacksonville pal Madeline Long acts as the perfect foil to Holmes, adding a sweet, girlish counterpoint to his deep register." NK / Earbuddy
Noel Stephen & The Darlings are going to be the second act of the evening.
"Young Atlanta group Noel Stephen & the Darlings crafts the kind of un-ironic rococo pop that winks at its musical forefathers (Serge Gainsbourg, Rufus Wainwright) while concurrently, and proudly, declaring its independence. The band's first album, Ten Years Too Late, has a very appropriate first-album feel. The production is inconsistent, vocalists trade off from song to song, and the band has a stylistic tendency to veer rather wildly back and forth from barroom country to the baroque and beyond. But there's a sweetness to the Darlings' blue-eyed approach, an honesty that's missing from most new music, that saves Ten Years Too Late from itself. Likewise, certain unanticipated moments — the dramatic downshift halfway through "Your Scarf," for instance — flirt with profundity. The Darlings' best moments are certainly ahead of them, but this altogether solid debut should prove a fine jumping-off point." - Gabe Vodicka / Creative Loafing Atlanta
“Inspired by the soul of the South and the spirit of gypsies, Lily and the Tigers play what they call gothic americana music. The band's foundation rests in the words, voice and guitar of Casey Hood and the restless beats of upright bassist Adam Mincey. The two call Atlanta, Georgia home and the musicians around town family. Their debut album, Sojourner, pulls in several other tigers. From trumpets and accordions to harpsichords and harmonicas, every song tells a different story. Since the band’s 2009 conception and their first national tour, Lily and the Tigers has blossomed into a full sound including alto clarinetist Mikhail Ally, lead guitarist Jared Pepper, and fiddler Ryan Gregory.”
It's a Wowser Bowser Christmas on Saturday, December 17th at The Drunken Unicorn.
"You know how to get a crowd going? Balloons. Wowser Bowser knows that with a little hot air and some cheap pieces of plastic you can unleash the kid in everyone. As you playfully hit the balloons all over the venue that barrier comes down and once again you are a kid, dancing and singing along with the band. Over the past two years I have seen about 100 different acts take to the stage, but few come close to the enthusiasm, energy and dedication applied to their live shows. When the band wasn’t up on stage jumping off their amps, they were venturing out into the crowd, staging interpretative dance competitions between sides of the crowd, having the time of their life all while wearing their festive costumes. It was Halloween and the band came prepared, forming a congruous union of a Big Mac hamburger, a tutu clad ballerina age 7, a large, headless penguin and even a member of Wowser Bowser, as the trumpet player went as himself.
Being outrageous stage personalities is one aspect of a great show, but they came with an amazing selection of music as well, including the amazing show closer “Water Story” which recently received the coveted “WUOG Song of the Day.” Above all, what the band did best was to just showcase their unbridled enthusiasm and the fun they had during the show, excitement brimming from their eager smiles. I’m sure it is easy to lose this attitude after hundreds of shows but its an essential ingredient for live performance, a contagion that infects the crowd. How can you not be excited and want to dance when the lead singer turned hamburger runs out into the crowd, spins and hops around like a drunken karaoke-ist whilst belting out his vocals perfectly. Wowser Bowser may have been a surprise to the largely unaware Drunken Unicorn audience but I wouldn’t be surprised if a few of the audience members walked away liking Wowser Bowser’s set more than the headliner, the Drums." -Will Guerin / WUOG blog

Qurious is the surprising collaboration between a hip-hip producer/sample collagist and a vocal texturist/muli-instumentalist. Since winter 2009, the pair has taken up casting a sonic net over the patrons of the Atlanta and Athens music scenes.
Whether from headphones or on stage, one is inevitably caught spellbound. The siren-like vocals which lay atop the depths of keyboard/sample-based aural tapestries capture intellects and sway those fleshy physical forms into dance. With compositions as various and interesting as their subject matter, Qurious challenges audiences to follow them through the melodic looking-glass, venturing into a more cerebral listening experience.
Summoning nature-inspired soundscapes in their premiere concept-album: Planet Plant, the group built an enthralling narrative of terrestrial imagery encapsulated in otherworldly vision. The piece served as a brilliant introduction to the band and landed them a Creative Loafing title: Best Ambient Composers of 2011. Keeping things inquisitive as always, the group can be expected to evolve their enigmatic and sexy brand of auditory escape.

Every so often you'll be drinking a glass of water, and tilt it down in such a way that the water will bounce off of itself and make a little "kerplop." Take that sound and repeat it over and over, until you get a "kerplopkerplopkerplopkerplop." THEN get all your friends and bang on whatever seems fit. Add bubbles and that's pretty much it.
Black Cobra is performing at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, December 16th, 2011.
"Southern Lord is proud to present the new opus from The Bay Area's devastating duo BLACK COBRA. Formed by drummer Rafa Martinez (ex-16, ex-Acid King) and guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian (ex-Cavity), BLACK COBRA catapulted themselves onto the scene in 2001 with their ravenous, upbeat and ultimately unique style of punk/hardcore-fueled sludge metal. They were picked up almost immediately by indie At A Loss Recordings becoming the band's label home for the release of their debut full-length, Bestial, and follow-up album, Feather And Stone. By 2009, with the band then virtually a household name to the tens of thousands of fans who've seen their flooring live performances over the years, BLACK COBRA signed with juggernaut Southern Lord Recordings for the release of Chronomega, the band's most diverse material to date."
Celebrated Atlanta, GA “psych metal” band ZOROASTER has completed work on its sophomore album. Entitled Matador, the record is set for a July 13, 2010 North American release date via E1 Music.
With Matador, ZOROASTER dares to defy genre-classification and proves that the band’s formidable reputation precedes it for a reason. Produced and engineered by Sanford Parker at Glow in the Dark Studios and The Living Room Recording in Atlanta, GA and mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room in Chicago, IL, Matador is a magnetic tour-de-force, blending vivid rhythms and radiance with the band’s classic use of dynamics and power. Creative, distinct, graceful and strong, Matador features the traits of a benchmark release. From the cosmic march of album opener “D.N.R.” through to the leviathan-like closing title track, it is immediately evident that ZOROASTER have joined friends – and fellow Atlanta natives – Mastodon and new label mates High on Fire as a unit determined to push modern heavy music into new and uncharted realms.
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead.
Of The Vine are headlining The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011.
"Every time I think I have a good handle on who’s who and what’s what in the Atlanta music scene, some band comes along and reminds me that I’m probably only listening to and touching on a fraction of what’s really going on. This week’s epic punch to the membrane comes courtesy of post-rockers, Of the Vine, who last Friday held a record release show at the Drunken Unicorn in celebration of their new self-titled EP.
I wish I had some sort of back story to provide you with but all I know is the band has been around is some form or another since early 2005. In 2006, they released their debut EP, the three-song We Took Our Trembling Hands From Our Ears and Their Cries Were Heard (told you they were post-rock). Somehow they managed to fly under my radar for all of six years, which makes me feel awfully lazy for some reason.
But now that I’ve heard them, I’m going to sing their praises. If you are into the epic swells and dynamic textures of post-rock, of music that aspires to climb and cling to the heavens, you would do well to check these guys out. The most obvious comparison would be to Explosions in the Sky and you can’t deny that the trio shares EITS’s penchant for crafting cinematic songs whose ebbs and flows carry the listener on an emotional journey. It may not be storytelling in the traditional sense with words and concrete actions, but within their elaborate song structures there are definite narrative arcs that lead you along and help invoke a certain symphonic sense of place and movement.
Of the Vine’s music is by turns dramatic, elegant and fragile. But when the moment suits them, they can also turn positively thunderous traversing into more metallic territory with muscular grooves and crushing guitars. Simply put, this band destroys. It’s some of the most beautiful and engaging stuff—local or otherwise—I’ve heard all year." Latest Disgrace
Good Weather For Airstrikes are going to be the second performer of the evening.
Good Weather for Airstrikes is a four-piece indie-rock band from Howell, MI. Since the band's inception, a wide and diverse amount of influences and experiences have enabled the group to refine a unique sound that combines the brooding ambience of post-rock with dynamic, guitar driven passages and impassioned lyrics reminiscint of modern indie and emo music.
Good Weather for Airstrikes was formed in the summer of 2008 by James Radick and Bill Grant, with Joe Hillier and Josh Fenn joining by the end of the year. The four released an EP, "Yearning," as well as several digital releases before putting out their debut full-length "To Have Our Hearts Emptied, To Be Left as We Came" in October 2011.
We protect you from Sunlandic Demons, Seabound Demons, Nordic Warewolves, and Comic Sans Fonts.
We also make music sometimes. But mainly we do our witchcraft and stuff.
Mr Gnome is performing at The 529 on Tuesday, December 13th, 2011
"After delivering several albums with flashes of brilliance but a lack of consistency, mr. Gnome have taken their biggest stride with Madness in Miniature, their third full-length album. Their previous two carried a common plague, where style reigned over substance as memorable hooks failed to form with over-active arrangements or superfluous stylistic pursuits. When mr. Gnome were at their best, it usually involved post-rock explosives with vocalist Nicole Barille stretching her exceptional vocal range to the limits. Both her guitar work and drummer/pianist Sam Meister’s technical skill were always apparent, but sometimes the songs struggled in letting loose and allowing melodies to reign over virtuosity.
Madness in Miniature is a different story. Standout “House of Circles” manages to inject freak-folk into a frenzied alt-rock arsenal. Barille’s voice ascends from a moaning whimper into a confident snarl, both accompanied by a backing vocal harmony producing a ghostly yet ethereal effect; the banshee-like ‘ooh’ing is a perfect fit. A clashing between the folk-leaning verses and explosions of alt-rock guitars comes to full fruition slightly past the three-minute mark. Introduced by an epic percussive build-up that marches along in a bluesy White Stripes fashion – and complemented by a quivering Barille, who puts in one of her best vocal performances yet – the conclusion to “House of Circles” is a rampant stunner that embodies mr. Gnome’s energy and structurally innovative tendencies." - Mike Mineo / Obscure Sound
Quit hatin. These dudes are fun. Raucous party tunes. Sometimes feete shufflink , sometimes a touch of metaltastic. These guys like hard work and ball sweat. If you haven't started moving yet, then you are really really running out of excuses at this point. Save your excuses for when you need them, like the next day when you were supposed to meet this cute girl for coffee at eleven AM, which you make but then have to explain your godawful smell because you met her at bible study and want her to think you are something that you are not.
They have an album. That they recorded. Do that.
Manray are performing second and celebrating the release of their new album "Tournament".
"For the uninitiated, Manray’s sound pulls from math rock, metal, punk, hardcore and even a smidgen of non-boring prog rock." Gordon Lamb / Flagpole
"Manray is one of the newest arrivals on the Athens math rock scene. The members of the band—who hail from Athens (or “Mathens,” as they jokingly refer to it)—perform progressive rock music characterized by abstruse time-changes and atonal chord voicings.
Touchstones for the band include King Crimson, Tortoise, The Mars Volta and local powerhouse Cinemechanica." -John Seay / Flagpole
CUSSES is a rock three piece band consisting of a conjoint, raw, forceful drummer, named Brian Lackey. With an insane vocal box named Angel Bond, and a gargantuan wave of guitar known as Bryan Harder. With a new lease on the vast world of music. The three set out to put a burn rather than a mark in endless music community. They hope to become a home grown affair for the Savannah borough and then anyone else that follows. The band looks forward to thrive in the live front so please join them in a defiant release of optimism.
Book Club are performing at The 529 on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011.
Atlanta’s Book Club, a modern folk quintet founded by Robbie Horlick (of indie rockers Cassavetes), navigates today’s indie-folk sea with a rare honesty and classicism. The band honors the folk tradition, yet is unbound by it; every song is a fresh take on an old history. Anchored by the rich and sweetly-sung co-ed harmonies of Horlick and Leigh Anne Macquarrie, their arrangements range from that of a lone nylon guitar to songs thoughtfully embellished by cello, double bass, pedal steel, melodica, glockenspiel, saxophone, percussion, and more. Paying simultaneous homage to their traditional, and their modern, influences, Book Club draws easy comparisons to She & Him, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and The Dutchess and Duke one minute, and Patsy Cline, The Carter Family, and Fleetwood Mac the next.
Multi-instrumentalist Tracy Shedd provides just that with her piano debut EP88, as seductive guitar melodies and string arrangements whirl around her silky, plush vocals. The grandeur of Tracy Shedd’s follow-up to Cigarettes & Smoke Machines (Teenbeat, 2008) proves she is only, as she sings in “How Your Eyes Affect Me,” “scratching the surface.”
EP88, Shedd’s first release written on piano, includes a supporting cast of standout Tucson musicians: husband James Tritten on guitar, and friends Becca Hummer on bass guitar, viola, and cello, Michael Hummer (Becca’s husband; PH8) on drums for “How Your Eyes Affect Me,” and Tasha Sabatino (Loveland, Lemon Drop Gang) on drums for “Husbands & Wives.” Stomp And Stammer felt Shedd’s “tales of the desire to fight through a strained relationship” on Cigarettes & Smoke Machines were autobiographical. If this was true, then Shedd has gained much wisdom and is now here for you, as she gloriously proclaims “tell me it all” on “City At Night,” “I’ll listen to all your ideas” on “How Your Eyes Affect Me,” and “If you ever need a friend, I’ll be the one that you can come running to” with “West Inn Love.” Shedd’s truthfulness with her lyrics has never been as forthcoming and prospective.
Virginia Plane is Atlanta singer/songwriter Mary O. Harrison, usually accompanied by McGregor Button, Tracy Clark, and Govind Dixit. Virginia Plane plays folk pop music marked by the sweet clarity of Mary O's vocals. On tour, Mary O. plays solo Virginia Plane shows.
The Good Graces was formed in early 2007 when I picked up a $90 guitar from Atlanta’s late great Lakewood Antiques Market and started fiddling around with some simple chords and melodies. It wasn’t long before those simple chords and melodies turned into catchy, heartfelt indiepop tunes. Having been through a tumultous divorce just three years prior, I guess failed relationships were on my mind. So I began exploring themes of heartache and hope, while both relecting on the past and looking forward to a happy future. The songs came very easily for me, so much that many of them seemed to write themselves.
It wasn’t long before the opportunity to play shows presented itself; the first was a short solo set at “See Through Souls,” an annual window art showcase put on by my friend Jenn Nelson. I played early in the day to a handful of friends, but one of them was John McNicholas. I had recently started playing with John in the Mary O. Harrison band (a great pop band for whom I played drums), so I knew he was an amazing player. So when he, perhaps jokingly, said that his own set was to serve as his audition for my band, I snatched him up quicker than you could say “twee.” With John on lead guitar, our style began to take shape, resulting in an atmospheric blend of shoegaze and folk.
Honor Society will be at The Five Spot on Sunday, November 27th, 2011

After three years of hard work and dedication, the boys of Sunderland are finally experiencing “A Change of Pace,” establishing themselves as one of the biggest unsigned pop/rock/alternative groups on the West Coast. These clean cut rockers and all-American quartet describe themselves as a determined group who’s serious but catchy lyrics appeal to all demographics. Sunderland recently wrapped up the nationwide “Wherever You Are Tour” alongside Honor Society and Katelyn Tarver and is constantly demanding attention wherever they are.
Hailing from Salisbury, MD this Grammy Nominated singer/songwriter has always had a hunger and a drive to learn music in its purest and simplest form without compromising the art. His musical influences and hero's include The Winans, Michael McDonald, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Eric Roberson and Phil Collins amongst many more.
Concord America are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Saturday, November 26th, 2011.
Concord America, or ConAm in the shorthand, is a band of four young men of questionable sexuality hellbent on world domination. Playing songs that often span multiple genres and emotional spectrums, Concord America guarantees full mental infiltration and inescapable pleasure. Their songs will be stuck in your head days after hearing them, and their live show promises high energy, tons of momentum, and you'll sweat your clothes right off. They promise.
Currently comprised of Cassidy Wall, Hayden Wall, Ian Mauldin and Jack Thomson, Freezerburn is an indie rock band from Alpharetta Georgia. With songs that range from fast paced shredding to mellowed out jams, and high energy performances, this band is sure to entertain you.
Sleep Dance originally started with Matt and Nick writing, recording, and playing songs they wrote as a collective. After finishing their first EP, they decided to bring in Ryan and Will to play shows and expand upon what they had written. The later addition of Brad further expanded the sound. Sleep Dance defies any set genre with stylistic qualities of acoustic rock, jazz, and indie rock. Intricate guitar work surrounded by ambient guitar sound, all driven by complex percussion is the best way to describe the sound.
Slowriter are headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, November 25th, 2011.
"Slowriter is the music of Bryan Taylor. Bryan spent 2008-2010 touring and recording with The Chariot. He released his first album, “What Keeps Me Sane” in 2009 while still touring with The Chariot. After he left The Chariot in 2010, he went into the studio with Ryan Boesch (Foo Fighters, Eels) to record the latest Slowriter EP. In 2011, Slowriter became a live band adding Nick Taft, John Cable, Matt Karoglou, and Phil Hawkins. With a full band and projection for each show, Slowriter is constantly working on improving the live show. They will be heading out on a southeastern tour in November. Visit the band’s website www.slowriter.net for more information.
1. Where are you from and how long have you been making music?
I was born in Atlanta and have always lived in Georgia. I’ve been making music for about 10 years. Starting with a Blink 182 cover band. I played in a “hardcore/metal” band in high school called The Rein. After high school I joined The Chariot. I toured and recorded with them for 2 years. I left in may of 2010. Now I am Slowriter.
2. Describe your sound in 5 words:
happy, joy, groove, mellow, chill
3. Who would you list as your top 3 musical influences?
in no order:
Empire of the Sun – Everything about this band has been a huge inspiration to me. I drove to New York last year from Atlanta to see them. They have a pretty brilliant live show and their singer has been a big influence on the way i sing.
Kanye West – A genius in some ways…. I just think he makes some of the most entertaining music to listen to.
The Flaming Lips – The overall happiness and good vibes that The Flaming Lips give off is something I really tried to achieve with my newest EP." - Sean Pritchard / The Blue Indian
"The Forest Wall are siblings Derek and Amanda Salazar from Washington DC. Their plainly named recording, The EP, contrasts with its absorbing, imaginative contents. Contrast is a pervasive and important element to this recording, as it can be observed throughout the album both within and between tracks.
The first track, Canon, opens with a beautiful flurry of notes cast in the form of electronically reproduced vocals before launching into somber reverie. Does It Make A Sound is complex indie pop full of rich harmonies and increasingly diverse orchestration over its course. Spanish Skies is simply beautiful, relying on strong vocals and guitar accompaniment. Suitcase Son opens sparsely and flourishes with thumping floor toms and bright guitar riffs, and then closes in pleading resolution. Suitcase Son is the strongest track on the album; enhanced by emotive and empathic intentions, it’s truly powerful. The closer, In the Pines, is consistent with the nature of contrasts that exist within this recording. It’s a lo-fi bluesy-folk number that features Amanda’s smoky vocals and is marked by a pervasive hiss reminiscent of recordings made on old cassette recorders. Its raw sound represents a core to the Salazar siblings, who present their talents well on this debut recording." The DaDaDa
The Last Relapse is a band hailing from Atlanta, GA. Started in 2006 by Vocalist/Guitarist David Holding, their sound consisted of acoustic guitars, catchy vocal melodies, and a tambourine. Around the time their drummer Justin Canada joined the band in 2007 the music began its evolution into something much more complex, obscure, and different. The band has gone through many lineup changes before getting to the solid one they have today with guitarist Ben Barlament joining in 2009, bassist Michael Emory in 2010, and guitarist Adam Freeman joining in 2011 . They released their first full length CD "Machine" in July of 2010 . You could describe the music as lyric driven Ambient/Rock with heavenly vocal and guitar effects and busy complementary bass lines held together by clever complicated drum beats. Columbia City Paper described their music this way: "Indie Rock with an ethereal, dream pop sound. Maybe if Modest Mouse smoked a bunch of opium it would sound similar?" Other major media outlets including Absolutepunk.net, Atlanta Music Guide, and around a dozen radio stations have played and shared their music. They have played over 100 shows in GA, TN, and SC. Currently they are working on a CD of 17 unreleased songs written from 2006-2008, and a CD of all new material. Both will be released very late 2011/early 2012!
The ATL Cunts Orchestra are headlining The Drunken Unicorn on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 (Thanksgiving EVE)
In the beginning there was two, then another and another. Then there were three, and now there are four. The ATL Cunts are your new favorite everything.
The Grayces will be the second performer of the evening.
"Bands can be a dime a dozen in Music City, and album release parties are more like a nickel. So when an exceptional band puts out a good album, the occasion calls for something extra — like maybe a costume party. That's what The Grayces are throwing tonight at East Nashville's The 5 Spot, kicking off the national tour in support of their new album Social Shock.
The record marks an advance for the band, and not just because it's their first full-length. Guitarist/ vocalist Iz Stone, bassist Patrick Ward and drummer Gaelen Mitchell still deliver plenty of garage-y guitar riffs, fuzzed-up bass, minimalist solos and sing-along choruses. But Stone makes up in swagger what her alto lacks in range, whether using a cabaret singer's world-weary croon in “No Sense In Crying” and “Like The Way” or squeaking like a squeeze toy on “Ricky” and “Eleanor.”" - Jo-Jo Jackson / Nashville Scene
