Kyle Andrews is headlining the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 14th

Kyle Andrews will be headlining The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 14th, 2011.



For years, Kyle Andrews has struggled with a dirty secret. He was, in the eyes of so many, a "singer-songwriter", his past pockmarked with words like "sweet," "catchy," and perhaps most often of all, "bedroom." However, according to Kyle, his latest full-length release Robot Learn Love only sounds like a bedroom pop album if your bedroom happens to be on an escape shuttle hurtling towards an exploding star.

Robot Learn Love is probably the closest Kyle Andrews has come to a concept album. Throughout, he explores themes of modern life -- love, heartbreak, hurt, and longing-- experienced through the filter of technology. "We work, create art, and communicate every day through some sort of computer device, some sort of robot," Kyle says. The album itself is a product of its theme: from the album art, inspired by a cellphone snapshot sent from the other side of the world, to the instant message abbreviations in song titles, and the composite of vocals collected by email in a single afternoon to form the chorus of "Lazer Tag With Imaginary Friends."

Despite its walls of electric guitars, raw synths and blasting drums, Robot Learn Love was conceived and recorded almost exclusively by Kyle himself. Robot is an exercise in duality: lo-fi vocals recorded through built-in laptop mics, others recorded through top-of-the-line studio preamps, drums simulated with software in the bedroom, and backing live string players tracked at pro recording studios. Half drowning in a swirl of stuttering synths, Andrews' plaintive cry, "Why's it got to be so complex?" at last gives way to a rest, a breath, only to be sucked back into the lush chaos. Throughout, Andrews balances the bombastic sonic textures with personality and warmth.

Parachute Musical will be the second performer.



"From the first note of “Back To Life,” the album’s opener, the tone and cadence of Kill It Cut It Down become immediately evident. The aggressive-but-bright pop-rock anthem begins with frontman Josh Foster pounding a rhythm into his piano keys, followed by a flood of lyrics that are generally grittier than the glossy and polished music accompanying them imply. The texture created by the seemingly-intentional contrast between melody and lyrics keeps the music smart, leaving room for versatility within each track. Despite the candid nature of Foster’s lyrics, Kill It Cut It Down is not at all transparent.

Produced by Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple, Incubus) in Cleveland, Ohio during the dead of winter, Parachute Musical further exemplify their proclivity to finding the harmony in contradictions. Describing their month in Cleveland as “the coldest month of our lives,” the final product sounds like a sunny and colorful summer album, untouched by freezing temperatures and Christmas carols. The music on Kill It Cut It Down subsides and escalates when you need it to, but the band reels it in during some of the crescendos, safeguarding the songs from falling victim to fist-pumping pop-rock melodrama.

The most impressive part of this album may be Josh Foster’s vocals. Powerful and melodic, it can sometimes be difficult to focus on what he’s saying because he makes it all sound so good. The band sounds solid during the loud moments, but the quieter moments of the songs shine a necessary spotlight on Foster’s lyrics and vocals, a trick best played on “Back To the Bottom,” when the music noticeably takes a backseat to each verse so the story of Foster’s past can momentarily steal the limelight.

“Losing You” is the album’s closer as well as its brightest diamond. A slow-build ballad about the beginning of the end of a relationship, the vocals and instruments on this song soar in a flourish of talent and heartbreak. The end of the album is the best place for this track because, as great as the rest of the album is, this one is difficult to get past.

Kill It Cut It Down asserts its solidity in finding perfect balance in the midst of contrast. Rather than creating a sloppy and contradictory album, Parachute Musical have found logic in the conflicting components of their music and created a lively and reflective album that will probably sound equally as fantastic when you hear it live." - Brianne Turner / Audioholic Media

FishHawk is an Atlanta based band. Their dance flavored electro beats, mixed with the soul of the 70’s and the decadence of 80’s “synthpop”, evolved into what is now known as the signature FishHawk sound. FishHawk formed during the summer of 2006 with producer and multi instrumentalist Andy Slagle and lead vocalist and wordsmith Nick Nickerson. Shortly after the completion of the 1st project, Matt Williams joined the band helping with live instrumentation. They have since toured up and down the east coast and released two albums and the recent EP "Spacehawk" all three available on iTunes. Fishhawk’s innovative style is molded from a variety of genre’s that have been melded together to create their unique style. Margot And The Nuclear So and So's are returning to the Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, October 13th

Margot & The Nuclear So & So's at The Drunken Unicorn on Thursday, October 13th, 2011



Margot & the nuclear so and so’s third album Buzzard is primal and truculent, going straight for the vitals. Opener “Birds” finds the band going to places they haven’t before – lovely, languid verses progressing into fuzzed out, howling choruses throughout the song’s twists and turns – while still holding to the guitar-based ethos on which the album is founded. “Lunatic, lunatic, lunatic” may be familiar sonic territory for singer/guitarist Richard Edwards, but the (very) dark humor that slowly unveils is something that he has only flirted with (innocently) in the past. “New York City Hotel Blues” and “Claws Off” distill Margot’s music to its essence: melody-driven pop music with teeth, set adrift against Edwards’ surreal and emotional, if slightly twisted lyrical tendencies. Similarly, “I Do” refines the evocative chamber-pop for which the band is known to its most heart-rending fundamentals, supported by simply Richards’ plaintive voice and an acoustic guitar.

And there is, of course, an intriguing path that led Margot towards this evolution in sound, which contrasts the lively optimism of 2008’s Animal! (and/or Not Animal, simultaneously released after contention with former label Epic). Buzzard was recorded over one freezing month last winter in an abandoned movie theater in Chicago’s Ukrainian Village neighborhood. Edwards had taken up residence there after leaving his hometown of Indianapolis, when the house where he and the previous seven members of the band had lived was damaged in a fire last summer. Once settled, he began writing a collection of songs loosely inspired by the 8mm ‘nudie cutie’ films unearthed in the theater’s basement, and the youthful reaction of mixed emotions that the films evoked.

After six months of writing, longtime Margot members Tyler Watkins and Erik Kang joined Edwards in Chicago and the three began to dig into the new material. A cast of local musicians, who had begun to come to the theater to watch weekly screenings of Kamikaze Hearts, soon also joined them. It was against this grainy backdrop that Edwards and Co. recorded the songs with the help of these new friends, including drummer/producer Brian Deck, Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), Joe Adamik, Cameron McGill, Katie Todd and Ronnie Kwasman.

Theater seating was cleared away to accommodate the instruments, while a makeshift control room was assembled in the projection perch. As the days went by, a dusky, Bacchic energy started to fill the theater and Buzzard began to take form. Recording took place between the hours of 10pm and 5am, and no artificial light was allowed (as such, three musicians and engineer Neil Strauch broke bones from tripping over cables). Accidents aside, the willful band – live and manic, newly freed from any past constraints – growled their way through the songs and infused them with a raw, forceful energy that Margot had only hinted at in their past recordings. The result is the band’s most immediate studio recording: bigger and louder than ever before, finally capturing Margot’s powerful, captivating live show and defiantly Midwestern sound.

Bear Hands will be starting the show.



Dylan Rau started Bear Hands to spite a romantic rival. In disconnecting himself from the love triangle (and successfully copulating with several other humans) he was able to write about 70 new and exciting songs. Joining forces with fellow Wesleyan university alumnus Ted Feldman and iconoclast punk veterans Val Loper and TJ Orscher the band started to stomp live. Both other bands and people in the crowd were stomped regularly and definitively.

Touring became a new way of life for Bear Hands after the 2007 release of their Golden EP. The band opened for MGMT, Vampire Weekend, The XX, Les Savy Fav and spent time on roads all over North America and Europe with now-dear friends Passion Pit, Obits, We Were Promised Jet Packs, Hockey, Manic Street Preachers, and Mayer Hawthorne and The County.

Following the success of their most-recent single "What A Drag" (Too Pure (UK) // Cantora US) Bear Hands delighted weekend warrior crowds at such iconic festivals as Reading, Leeds, Siren, Rockness, and Forecastle. They did shows in Brazil with fellow Brooklynites Chairlift and Telepathe, narrowly escaping with their lives and intestinal parasites.

And now things are really starting to get heavy for Bear Hands. Their debut LP, Burning Bush Supper Club, took over a year to finish, slowed to a crawl by mental illness, intraband resentment, and a generally pervasive sense of indecision. Produced before the watchful eyes of frenemies and industry fat cats alike, Burning Bush Supper Club sees Bear Hands reach unprecedented levels of both truth and relevance. The songs are beautiful and new.

Army Navy was born in the bedroom of Justin Kennedy, who in his early days played with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) in Seattle’s Pinwheel. Having relocated to Los Angeles after Pinwheel broke up, Kennedy began focusing on his new project and started assembling members for Army Navy. Multi-instrumentalist Louie Schultz joined swiftly after hearing Kennedy’s home demos. Without a permanent sticks man at the time of recording the first album, Army Navy’s album boasted drumming by the legendary Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello and The Attractions, who had been a longtime fan of the band. Army Navy soon found their permanent drummer Douglas Randall.

Santah was born with their heads in the clouds and their feet stuck in the dirty ground. Luckily, right before they grew up for good, a tidal wave swept them up, quick as can be, and sent them teetering across the continent. They howled in confusion when that water came, arms all flailing, their faces purple as raisins. But they rolled back their eyes and just like that, they were in some holy home, right there in their own head, right there on that ocean, riding a wild and blurry-eyed vision, just being the most confused and luckiest boys to ever live or die in the whole goddamn world, just like that, all over the place.

"After just a few listens to Mood Rings’ “Promise Me Eternity” b/w “Exorcized Painting” 7-inch, it's plain to see that both songs saddle up with the same dreamy drift that defined the group's sound upon releasing the Sweater Weather Forever EP back in January. Growth has taken place but mostly on a meta level that reveals more with each successive spin, allowing atmosphere and damaged pop aesthetics to unfold with an unhurried pace.

Although it’s generally a charming song, “Promise Me Eternity” falls on the breezy side, which is fine, and not really out of character for Mood Rings. But it lacks the murky and alluring bottom-end that marked the group’s intro, and illuminated much of the mystery that lined the hiss and negative spaces in Sweater Weather.... That said, this new single moves at the speed of clouds floating in the summer sky, and is quite easy on the psyche. Just as one ear latches onto the jangling strum of the guitar and drums that fly by like a sonic boom, the other ear gets lost in the lazy day melodies that consume the song with mesmerized and romantic pop motions.

On the flipside, “Exorcised Painting” comes to an end almost as quickly as it springs to life at only 1:32. Of the two songs here the b-side is far and away the more energetic number — short sweet and tailor-made for repeat needle drops. When placed side-by-side, both songs give an intriguing look at a band that’s becoming increasingly comfortable with its recorded self, and hinting at what may be lying in wait with the wealth of songs that Mood Rings has been sharpening on stages all year long." - Chad Radford / Creative Loafing Atlanta

"Bottle Up And Explode is a foursome from Auburn, AL, and it does not play country music. This is a band that reflects modern and classic influences, the two most salient being the Beatles and the Strokes (singer Chris Cargile’s vocals recall proven Lennon/McCartney formulas as well as Julian Casablancas’ lyrical styling). This dynamic is surprising for guys whose upbringing largely forbade music and pop culture at large.

The band members grew up in a deeply religious part of the South where church wasn’t just on Sundays. The Thomas brothers—Micah (keyboard) and Caleb (lead guitar)—were home-schooled, so steady glimpses of the outside world were snatched here and there until the cultural blast-shields wore thin and finally collapsed all together. The other half of the band went through a similar experience. Just how severe was the music ban growing up? Remember the movie Footloose? The band’s bio tells tale of burnings at the local chapel of popular books, movies and music. “It was more like breaking,” explains Cargile, who tore up a Goosebumps book and had a friend stomp on his Lion King VHS. Cargile’s father took a hammer to his records, and only the Beatles were spared. “Oldies were somehow exempt from the devil,” says Cargile. “I don’t understand the logic of that, but the early ’60s and earlier were exempt. I’m glad he saved those.” The boys are full of stories from those days, perhaps because they’re so elemental to their music. The taste of freedom, after so long without it, proved to be intoxicating.

Bottle Up And Explode’s EP, Kingsley, embodies that spirit wholeheartedly. It’s exuberant and uptempo, a rallying cry, free of the hang-ups of modern malaise. Cargile sings about the friends in his hometown, getting older, getting dumped. This is all typical pop-fair but freshly packaged in both Cargile’s boyish voice and sheer musical energy. It’s no secret that these guys are genuine, as their honesty shows up in whatever they’re doing. “I think as far as our sound goes we wanted to do something that sounded as young and immediate as we feel and live our lives,” says Cargile. “Everything down South is a little old, a little worn out,” says Caleb Thomas, “and it’s easy to see that you’re headed for a graveyard like all your kin before you. "Owen Holmes hails from Jacksonville, Florida. Wow, there’s one place I’ve never wanted to go. Already, I digress.

He plays bass for the Black Kids. They’re okay, I guess; hadn’t really given them much thought. If his (mostly) solo project Gospel Music is any indication, though, Holmes has a solid future as a singer-songwriter. And not one of those boring, self-indulgent ones, but more like an entertaining, diverting, poetic and self-indulgent one – hey, the last goes with the territory. Pretty much.

Recorded at home in the Sunshine state, How to Get to Heaven From Jacksonville, FL is a small treasure for anyone attracted to literate, self-abasing humor and primitive, but musical melodicism. Taking substantial cues from Lou Reed and Stephin Merritt, Holmes writes with pith and wit about romantic mismatch (“Bird/Fish”), romantic despair (“This Town Doesn’t Have Enough Bars for Both of Us”), romantic betrayal (“I Shared Too Much with Her”) and romantic resignation (“Bedroom Farce”). He self-accompanies these little morsels with sharp, spare instrumentation that concentrates on acoustic guitar, toy piano and ukulele, fleshed out with all manner of instrumentation, including the standard bass and drums (he even uses banjo without making me grab for my faux-Americana annihilator … a handy weapon, indeed). With limited chops, Holmes makes the most out of nifty little framing lines on guitar, bits and pieces of melodic guitar-age, stray elements of this and that, from the Velvets to the Ventures." Lille is Grace Bellury, an songstress from Atlanta, GA. Born a poor asian boy, Grace accompanied his father and three sisters to America, where they sailed on a ship carrying spices to every corner of the earth. He was the friend of every swarthy sailor and sat up late at night in the cabins below the deck, the warm lantern glow radiating off the roughened yet kindly faces, spinning stories of exotic girls from every continent and exploits worthy of a Conrad novel. The sailors constructed papooses made from sturdy rope for Grace and his small sisters and they hung suspended from the ballast every night, sleeping peacefully.

The Subliminator is celebrating the release of "Death Singing" at the Drunken Unicorn on Friday, October 7th

The Subliminator will be celebrating the release of his "Death Singing" ep on Friday, October 7th at The Drunken Unicorn.



"Part prophet of doom, part musketeer, The Subliminator painted an almost Messianic figure as he sauntered to the stage dressed all in black, his face obscured by long black hair and sunglasses. Taking the third, sixth, ninth, and 12th songs, he used an array of five optical theramins to erect densely layered loops in a matter of seconds. After establishing a framework of electronic beats and glitchy digital effects, he would record a background of guttural groans, a pratice which called to mind the film scores of Alejandro Jodorowsky. Only after these entrancing sonic structures had effectively seeped into the listener’s head, however, did The Subliminator begin his real work, spouting enraged, socially conscious spoken word poetry with the Vietnam-era fervor of The Monks. Touching on capitalist greed, social injustice, religious hypocrisy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and at one point playing both parts in an imagined conversation between George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, The Subliminator is aptly named to say the least. Like an Alan Ginsburg acid dream brought to vivid life, his self-serious commitment to this provocative material brought a welcome sincerity to a poetic form that too often slides into the cheesy.

Ignoring the crowd and distancing himself from the other bands for most of the night, this man did not suggest water, and while it was never explicity stated, I’m not sure he intended to. His focused outrage against the Bush administration and the Iraq war, not to mention his jet black attire and noticeable nonparticipation in the liquid cominglings of Tunabunny and Box Devils, characterized The Subliminator as an ominous spot of oil drifting atop the surface of the ATHICAn Sea. In so doing, his performance could not help but invoke the horrifying images that have been coming in from the Gulf of Mexico these past few weeks as the Deepwater Horizon spill continues on its indiscriminate path of drifting death. In winding down a show so brilliantly curated around the often devastating effects of water, The Subliminator reminded the crowd that these tragedies extend beyond the decoarted walls of the ATHICA art gallery into people’s homes and lives, and that without vigilance against corporate greed, environmental devastation, and national oil-lust, we could all wake up one day underwater.” – David Fitzgerald / Flagpole

Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups' unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally Funk-worthy.

The next phase of the Ambassador's mission is his debut album Toeachizown: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today's scene with Dãm's own original "Modern-Funk" compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records' like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought Dãm on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It's a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk."

Master Blazter:

"BLAZT OFF, a mix by Los Angeles’ own DJ Kutmah, showcases the individual styles of Computer Jay, J1, and D-F. Collectively, they are known as Master Blazter. Individually, each is accomplished in his own right, and as a group, there is no stopping the funk they create.

Computer Jay develops hard hitting tracks built upon moog, rhodes and personally tweaked electro systems. J1 provides the backbone of rhythm on drums, while equally being comfortable producing quality funk laced beats. D-F adds his signature vocals and provides layers of deep funk with his own keyboards and keytar.

Dwight Conroy Farrell (born August 25, 1973), better known by the stage name Count Bass D, is an American rapper, record producer and multi-instrumentalist from Nashville, Tennessee. His production style is characterised by layers of short MPC samples and film snippets complemented with live instrumentation, and eccentric lyrics laid atop.
