Noot d'Noot GRAND FINALE at MJQ Concourse - Saturday, May 31st, 2014

Saturday, May 31st 2014 at MJQ Concourse as part of MJQ's 20th Anniversary is the

Noot d'Noot GRAND FINALE!

"Everyone break out the tissues and feel-good ice cream tubs, Atlanta funk-glam-afrobeat troubadours Noot D' Noot have just announced a farewell show on May 31 at MJQ.

The eclectic genre-benders have been a mainstay in Atlanta for nearly eight years and the group's live shows have been famed for their Funkadelic-style of high-energy fun mixed with theatrical dance-chaos. Their last album, 2013's stellar Horn of Plenty, was an impressive showcase of styles, from the Gary Glitter-tinged single, "Streetfighter," to the tripped-out space-jam "Worm the Starhole." The Noots even developed a bizarro vocabulary, e.g. Do you Chunky Dunk?, and all of its members have some of Atlanta's best alter-egos. I mean who could forget the inimitable Dookie Platters, or the shape-shifting Kid Pyramid, or the partying M.D. Dr. Kinje?

The octet even made an impressive array of friends along the way. It collaborated with Dungeon Family luminary Sleepy Brown, opened for Athens-born of Montreal, and even added synthesizer parts to Mastodon's 2009 album, Crack the Skye.

Simply put, Noot D' Noot brought the party like no one else could. Let's hope this farewell is just a door to something brighter, groovier, and with more Chunky Dunk then Atlanta's ever seen before." - Paul DeMerritt

Throwing Shade Live at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, May 23rd, 2014

Throwing Shade Live is coming to The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, May 23rd, 2014, featuring Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi

.

We take a look at all the issues important to ladies and gays...and treat them with much less respect than they deserve. Can you handle it?

Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi met while performing at UCB Theater in Los Angeles. But it was writing and hosting segments on Current TV’s Infomania where they fell in love -- a kind of love you can’t put into words, but is definitely non-sexual.

You may know them as Michele and Marcus Bachmann on Funny or Die, but they do all sorts of things together, like write TV scripts, eat salads from Gelson's, write jokes, perform their monthly live show "Entertainment Hollywood" at the UCB Theatre in LA, go to parties, and of course, speak into microphones to record this very podcast, Throwing Shade!

SKATERS - Friday, May 16th, 2014 at The Drunken Unicorn

SKATERS will be appearing at The Drunken Unicorn on Friday, May 16th, 2014.

SKATERS formed in NYC in 2012. The group's birth can be traced to a hectic 24 hours in Los Angeles in the summer of 2011, when singer and songwriter Michael Ian Cummings met English guitarist Josh Hubbard at a party at a "really fancy-ass house," as Cummings recalls.

A few months later, the still band-less Cummings got a call from Hubbard announcing that he'd be arriving in NYC the following day from the U.K. He'd be in town for a month and a half and wanted the group to play a gig. So they hooked up with Drummer Noah Rubin and local bassist Dan Burke, booked three shows, learned some songs Cummings and Rubin had been tinkering with (and a handful of Pixies covers), and SKATERS was formed. Later that year, the band signed to Warner Bros. Records.

Their debut record, MANHATTAN, shares stories of the city where they met. "We were all bartenders, so the songs are tales of experiences we had or saw, and other people who were characters in our life during the first year we were in this band," Cummings says.

Turf War are performing before SKATERS.

Formed as a bedroom recording project by singer/guitarist John Robinson in 2008, Turf War became a full band in mid-2009 and began to grow a local following in their hometown of Augusta, GA before moving to Atlanta. Their style is gritty, Southern-tinged indie punk rock, with major influences from The Replacements, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bruce Springsteen, and 60 years of rock and roll.

Baby Baby are starting the show.

"What with Mike D busy getting photographed by the New York Times in his well-appointed Brooklyn town house, someone had to pick up the "Fight For Your Right (to Party)" mantle, or watch the whole enterprise given over to self-seriousness and poise. Enter Atlanta quintet Baby Baby, the perfect men for the job. Channeling the Beastie Boy's silly irreverence and party-rockin' spirit, Baby Baby blend pop/punk songwriting with a hip-hop swagger and an emphasis on the live experience, which is something akin to the party scene in a teen movie, only everyone there can drink, and the party's actually fun."

Morning Parade are Steve Sparrow (vocals/guitar), Chad Thomas (guitar), Phil Titus (bass), Ben Giddings (synth) and Andy Hayes (drums). And they’re set to be among the most exciting breakout guitar bands of 2014.

Morning Parade hail from the Essex satellite town on Harlow, and they know the pleasures and frustrations of towns like that better than most. As Steve explains of the town, which is still struggling to adjust to the decline of its manufacturing base: “Harlow’s like a weird bubble where no-one really enters and no-one really leaves.”

We are not for the faint of heart. Our brash, gritty, whip-smart sound foregoes guitar in favor of bass, drums, and electronic samples. At our shows, the audience is part of the band. That's what makes playing each show uniquely exciting and inspiring. We will give you 100% every time because we truly love what we do. Hopefully, you give us 100% back.
